CYNICS AND SCEPTICS AND BLOGGING IN MALAYSIA.
…IS THAT ALL THAT IT CAN CREATE?
By Mansor Puteh
THE CYBER WORLD AND BLOGGING AMONGST MALAYSIANS HAVE PROVEN THAT THEY HAVE NOT REALLY BENEFITED THEM AS WHAT WAS EXPECTED FOR THEM TO DO.
THEY ARE JUST FOR SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND WHICH LATER BECAME A TOOL OF DISSENT AND THE CREATION OF A NEW GENERATION OF CYNICS AND SKEPTICS, AND GIVING THOSE WHO WERE NON-EXISTENT TO BE SOMEBODY WHOM THEY THINK SO HIGHLY OF.
IN THE END THEY FAILED TO REALIZE THAT THEY HAD INDEED TRAMPLED THE DEMOCRACY THAT THEY CLAIM TO BE CHAMPIONING FOR WHICH THEY ARE NOW ENCOURAGING ANARCHY TO REIGN.
Anarchy at its best, to them, is total democracy, where laws and institutions are to be disregarded and those who have the talent to distract anyone can be hailed as the new heroes of the land; for they are the ones who are looking after the conscience of the country of this new generation.
That they are the only person who cares so much for the future of the people and country.
Yet, they disregard the democratic process and do not believe in having general elections or holding referendums. These are annoyances that the true democrats cannot bear with.
Unfortunately, not many people in Malaysia are taken by them; they can go on shouting till their voice becomes coarse and yet, nothing happens as the average Malaysians prefer to do it the old and conventional way of going to the polls and electing those whom they think can best represent them.
Worse, when the bloggers find themselves that time is catching on them so that when the right time comes, they will go down into their shallow graves and without leaving anything behind for the future generations to wonder at other than to feel a disdain for.
They do not bequeath a legacy of hope but despair and confusion; a legacy which cannot be etched on any marble and put on display, for there once lived a true Malaysian who did not care for race, color or skin and who was a true hero of the land.
They will all die without leaving behind a tradition that can be used by the others after them; they are their own persons, their own organization and movement – their own one-man think tank which is essentially empty which gave a lot of sounds and noises.
Malaysia is quick to create cynics and skeptics who play the racial card which they claim to be not doing. But the truth is that this is what they have been doing all this while, for without the race and religious and nationalistic card, they won’t have any bone of contention with anyone, other than with their predecessors or parents whose parents had chosen to come to the land in order to survive, for without the initiative, they would have perished and starved like many of their relatives and close friends had experienced.
So the internet and blogging are nothing but on race and religion. And after more than a decade of internetting and blogging, some Malaysians have become confused with many issues.
These are basically the preoccupation of a small fraction of the society. But the noise they make looks like there are many more who are like them.
What we have seen is that they have created more skeptics and cynics in the country today than we had before.
Any issue can be twisted and queries form the basis for disputes, while authority has been degraded.
Laws are also trampled with impunity in the name of fair-play, democracy and the freedom of speech and of expression.
But alas, the press for such freedoms and also of the press has seen more Malaysians using the court in their bid to clean their image by instituting action suits for defamation claiming exorbitant amounts, while deaths on the highways are not worth anything.
In Malaysia, it seems that the 'air muka' (literally 'water face') or legally, standing and image of a person is said to be more expensive, especially those in politics and the fast lane, compared to the ordinary bus passengers and the other members of the public who are killed and maimed, while the members of parliament and other petty politicians spend their time speaking in the many 'ceramah' every day and night mostly talking on the same tired issues which should have been settled at the ballot box.
Malaysians who blog and write commentaries posted in many of them are so busy writing. But alas most of them do not spend too much time thinking, so much so that they have been turned to cynics and skeptics, who have a lot of grouses to share with the others, which in turn manage to make them worse cynics and skeptics they were when they first started to blog and use the internet for social communication.
Is this what the internet and cyberworld have managed to make many of them?
There are not many who write intelligently using their names so that they are not seen to be cowards who hide behind pseudonyms, where they can spout venoms of incomprehensible words.
But what thrill do they get from doing that since no one could 'acknowledge' them for what 'brilliance' that they had shown?
It was like in the old days of scratching weird thought on walls in public toilets, that are read but whose works could not be acknowledged as the writers were people who refused to show their faces or tell who they are.
It is sad that such 'brilliance' and the 'intellectual properties' that they had created cannot be claimed by the original authors and copyright cannot be given to them.
When will Malaysians learn how not to be cynical or skeptical with everything that they hear or read about, all of which do have possibilities of being turned into issues for debates?
Are public debates on those issues necessary to prove one's intellect, or it is just to bring out the cynic and skeptic in them?
